I have to disagree though that Final Cut only supports HEVC from an Apple device. The camera still shows as "supported" on Apple's website. This apparently started happening after a December 2021 firmware update and they also claim no changes were made in the codecs. PS- I also have a ticket opened with GoPro's escalation support and although they've been very kind, they haven't been very forthcoming, even going so far to say they cannot recreate the issue in-house. The more we can call attention to this, hopefully the quicker we'll get a resolution. Nevertheless, I think if you haven't already, you should call into Apple Support and very patiently explain to them what you're experiencing. I'd be curious if you also have the issue when trying to playback GoPro footage (I noticed GoPro's Quik software listed in your EtreCheck report, so I assume this is the case). Thanks to a random commenter on YouTube, I learned that if you Force Quit VTDecoderXPCService in Activity Monitor, it will allow the transcode to continue. In addition, if you try and transcode the footage in Final Cut, sometimes it will hang even though Final Cut appears to be functional. I've even gone to the trouble of completely reinstalling Monterrey to a second APFS Volume, installing no other apps but Final Cut Pro, and then recreated the issue. It only appears to happen on late Intel-era MacBooks. I have been working on this issue off and on with Apple since April. I can recreate this issue consistently with footage from the GoPro Hero 10 and it appears to also happen with certain flavors shot on the GoPro Hero 11 (though the new 10-bit encoded footage so far appears to only intermittently have this issue). Just want to add that I have the exact same issue with the exact same MacBook. I meant to add these details to this post so thanks for the reminder, hopefully this info helps you as well, For the full list check out this article. You can change the codec setting on the GoPro to shoot H.264, but it only is available for certain resolutions, but 4K 30 FPS is supported for it. Buying the Hero 10 kind of seems like a waste now since I can't shoot anything in 5.3k. It seems that a pro-level video editing app should have support for the codec. Hopefully Apple will add HEVC support for video from non-Apple devices, but who knows when that might come. Sometime I can play the 5.3k clips back with Quicktime, sometimes they cause it to stop responding also and require a force quit. This is a paid app also that can covert HEVC/H.265 that claims to be lossless. This article outlines the settings to use in Handbrake (which is free). All of the clips I coverted worked normally and Final Cut didn't stop responding and crash. To confirm this was the problem, I took the 5.3k clips that were causing Final Cut to stop responding and converted them to use H.264 compression at 4k resolution using Handbrake. I did call Apple support and esclated through a couple of tiers until I got someone who told me the issue was with the clip, but I didn't believe them at first and kept digging to see if I could figure out the root cause myself.Īccording to the release notes for Final Cut, as of 10.4 it only supports HEVC video from Apple devices.įinal Cut Pro release notes - Apple Support It is the clip from the GoPro, and the HEVC/H.265 compression codec that the Hero 10 (and I assume the Hero 11) uses for the 5.3k resolution video. So I was able to figure out what was causing this issue and (for me atleast) either Chome or CleanMyMac.
